Lincoln at Gettysburg by Garry Wills5/13/2023 Wills’ book is featured this year in UC Berkeley’s On the Same Page program. He tried to expel fanaticism in times of war.” “Lincoln was always trying to calm people down in times of religious fervor. There have been some hellish things about religion and politics lately,” Wills said. “This too is a time of great trouble in many ways. Speaking to about 600 people, Wills discussed his book, “Lincoln at Gettysburg: The Words That Remade America,” touching on the religious and political circumstances that surrounded the president and his famous speech. It’s not often that students hear a speech about a speech, especially not one given nearly 150 years ago.īut last night at Zellerbach Hall, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Garry Wills argued that Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address remains as relevant in the 21st century as it was during the Civil War.

Wanderlust a history of walking5/13/2023 by one walker, with much doubling back and looking around." That's accurate, if a little modest "Wanderlust" is a delightful, mind-expanding journey that strays from Søren Kierkegaard's Copenhagen and William Wordsworth's Lake District to the top of Everest and the New Mexico desert, from the first hominids to walk upright (whoever and wherever they were) to contemporary women who face the hazards of solitary walking. Her history is, as she puts it, "an idiosyncratic path traced. Of course, as Solnit points out, she has written a history of walking, not the history, which is all but infinite. Why not the history of talking, or breathing? Whether she takes this trinity to extremes is a matter of interpretation, but you could argue that even the attempt to write a history of walking - arguably the defining human activity - is itself extreme. Discussing an eccentric 18th century peripatetic named John Thelwall in her new "Wanderlust: A History of Walking," Rebecca Solnit writes that he suggests "something of a pattern: autodidacts who took the trinity of radical politics, love of nature, and pedestrianism to extremes." While I'm pretty sure Solnit herself has a formal education, her astonishing range of reference and her indefatigable curiosity suggest the passion of an autodidact, and in every other respect she fits the pattern, too.

The kiss quotient review5/13/2023 Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. "-Buzzfeed A heartwarming and refreshing debut novel that proves one thing: there's not enough data in the world to predict what will make your heart tick. With the looks of a K-drama star and the martial arts moves to match, the Vietnamese-Swedish stunner can't afford to turn down Stella's offer"-īook Synopsis From the author of The Bride Test comes a romance novel hailed as one of The Washington Post's 50 Notable Works of Fiction in 2018 and one of Amazon's Top 100 Books of 2018! "This is such a fun read and it's also quite original and sexy and sensitive."-Roxane Gay, New York Times bestselling author "Hoang's writing bursts from the page. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice-with a professional-which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. It doesn't help that Stella has Asperger's, and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. About the Book "Stella Lane comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases-a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old.

The Birchbark House by Louise Erdrich5/13/2023 In these posts, our plan is to write about the series as a whole and to discuss themes that occur across all five books, although we will focus slightly more on the first three books in this post and then on the later books in the second. The first three books follow Omakayas throughout her childhood, while the latter two are set later and written from the perspective of her twin sons, although Omakayas still features prominently. The Birchbark House books center around a young girl named Omakayas (whose name is an Ojibwe word meaning “little frog”), and her family’s experiences in the 1840s and 1850s living near what is now known as Lake Superior. Both this post and another in the upcoming months will be dedicated to contemporary author Louise Erdrich’s The Birchbark House series.

The earthsea quartet5/13/2023 This was due mainly to the in-depth descriptions of Arha’s visits to the Undertomb and the Labyrinth. The book’s narrative keeps you intrigued although I must admit that I found the opening chapters of The Tombs of Atuan rather hard going. Although this is a book that can be read and enjoyed by children and adults, its themes are far more adult than say, The Chronicles of Narnia or the Harry Potter series. The books, first published in the late 1960’s, are written in a simple, free-flowing style and I quickly fell under their charm. The four books are: A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore and Tehanu. The novels belong to the high fantasy genre and follow a young boy from the discovery of his magecraft through to him becoming the greatest mage of all time. The Earthsea Quartet brings together Ursula Le Guin’s four legendary Earthsea sagas for the first time in a single volume. |
